Taking care of your smile every day will go a long way to building a solid oral health foundation that will serve you for a lifetime. This means cleaning your pearly whites diligently to clear away harmful plaque and food particles from your mouth. Without this daily oral hygiene step, your smile will be vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.

Today our dentists, Dr. Raquel Wright and Dr. Leena Hoang, are pleased to share with you some ways to care for your toothbrush, one of the most important tools in your smile care kit.

— When you use ADA approved products for your mouth, you can be assured that they are safe and effective and will do what they claim to do. They have been rigorously tested to pass effectiveness standards. Purchase a toothbrush that has soft-bristles and which fits comfortably in your mouth as you work to reach all the areas needing cleaning. You can use a fluoride toothpaste if you have a history of cavities, and if you have sensitive teeth, a desensitizing toothpaste can help.

— To clean your teeth properly and to protect them from tooth decay (and gum disease), we recommend brushing your teeth at least two minutes, twice a day, preferably one of them at bedtime. Brushing more often might be hard on tooth enamel and the gums, and brushing less may leave you with harmful bacterial residue that can attack your smile. Find a healthy balance and stick to that.

— After cleaning your teeth, rinse your toothbrush well to wash away oral debris and bacterial residue. When you store your toothbrush in between uses, keep it upright and away from other toothbrushes. Air dry your toothbrush between each use and avoid contamination. To make sure your toothbrush keeps working effectively, replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. You should replace it sooner if the bristles are fraying.
